Long COVID

What clinicians have learned since 2020 about post-COVID conditions and their connection to existing knowledge

Defining Post-COVID Conditions

The WHO defines post-COVID-19 condition as occurring in individuals with a history of probable or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, usually 3 months from the onset of COVID-19, with symptoms that last for at least 2 months and cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis.

Common Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of taste/smell

Prevalence

Estimated 10-20% of COVID-19 cases develop long-term symptoms, affecting millions worldwide regardless of initial disease severity.

Connecting to ME/CFS

Research has revealed striking similarities between Long COVID and ME/CFS. Many Long COVID patients meet diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, particularly those with post-exertional malaise as a dominant symptom.

Clinical Insight: The overlap suggests shared pathophysiological mechanisms, potentially accelerating research into both conditions through combined study populations.
